Emile's Linen Story, Berlin
Emile greets us with a grin and a cup of freshly-ground coffee at the door of her cosy Berlin apartment. If we'd come a little later, she would have brought out her true passion – wine, she tells us, nodding to her beautiful wine maps on the walls. We settle in with her on her couch, ready to spend an easy Sunday morning talking about all things life and linen.
Happy Sunday. What would you be doing any other day of the week?
I don’t think Sundays are much different except that I might sleep in for a bit longer. My morning routine is very important to me as it is 'my time' during the day. Funnily enough, I spend almost all of it in bed!
I wake up early (around 6-7 am). However, I MUST snooze and cuddle in the sheets for at least 15 minutes before making my way to the coffee machine. I would then bring my black coffee to bed, journal, read and meditate while still hugging my soft linen sheets. I don't use my phone for any communication until a few hours later.
How did you get into making wine maps?
I've always loved wine, but the idea to start a business came to me after I visited Piedmont, Italy.
Beautiful scenery, delicious wine and food inspired me to learn more about wine in general and create stylish wine maps for a modern home.
You’re an entrepreneur and overall a very busy woman. What is the best way for you to slow down at the end of a tiring day?
I'm not the best at winding down, still looking to improve this part of my life. However, I love having a glass of wine with dinner and just watching some courses or a silly TV show.
Once I'm in bed, I'll read a few pages from a novel or some other book that is not business related. I am currently reading an amazing book The Almanack of Naval Ravikant: A Guide to Wealth and Happiness. It’s also very important to me that the room is dark and cold.
What do you love about linen?
I love linen clothes, especially in the summer, so I thought why not try linen sheets as well. My Linuhn sheets definitely exceeded my expectations!
I have sensitive and dry skin, so I make sure I use soft, natural fabrics that feel comfortable and allow my skin to breathe. I've heard that linen even has an exfoliating effect on the skin.
How did switching to linen bedding affect your sleep?
The main difference for me is that I feel like my body temperature is being maintained better throughout the night. I don’t wake up feeling too hot in the morning anymore. It also brings a luxurious feeling to the whole bedroom and makes my sleeping experience somehow just a little bit more special and inviting.
You picked out Sea Foam White for your bedding. What does the colour make you think of?
As a child, I spent all my summers at the seaside. The sea will always have a special homecoming feeling for me. I still visit the Baltic Sea with my family and friends every summer. We spend our time relaxing, exercising, walking along the shore and drinking wine. Even when I'm far away, this colour instantly takes me back to those memories.
You've just moved into your new place and we couldn't help but notice how much character you've brought into your environment. What are your favourite interior and decor stores in Berlin?
Thank you for your kind words, I put a lot of love into creating my new space. I like minimalism with some cosiness and clean design. Some of my favourite concept stores are Westwing, Parkhaus, Victoria Met Albert.
